Cumulative risk maps for habitat and fauna

An innovative and unique tool

Concrete example from a research published in 2014 on Landscape Ecology describing the impact of existing and planned wind turbines on a bat species on a regional scale. The study was carried out in the Molise region (central Italy).

The risk maps, highly refined environmental modelling products, allow to spatially represent the risk areas for habitats, animal and plant species in relation to infrastructure development.

Our service is applicable to the different phases of planning, authorization and realization of an infrastructure:

in a preliminary phase
to support the institution in charge of issuing the authorizations by supplying a tool able to investigate the effect of each infrastructure in its territory at different spatial scales;
in the planning phase
of an infrastructure;
in the authorization phase
(e.g. Evaluation Impact Assessment, EIA) to help the building company identify possible cumulative risks by completing the data of the EIA studies with new valuable information;
in the authorization phase
to help the institution in charge of issuing the authorizations evaluate the cumulative impact on the territory where the infrastructure, whose project has already been submitted to EIA, is planned to be built.

Prediction and spatial representation of risk areas

The risk maps integrate the EIA studies providing an effective tool helpful to reduce the EU infringement procedures due to the violation of the Directives 92/43/EEC (Habitat Directive) and 79/409/EEC (Birds Directive).

Our maps are a very flexible tool that could be easily extended to other conservation issues such as wildfires, pathogens and alien species expansion in agriculture.
