We\u00a0developed a regional-scale model to assess the wind\u00a0farm impact on bat migration and commuting routes.\u00a0The model was implemented for the bat Nyctalus\u00a0leisleri in a region of central Italy currently undergoing\u00a0considerable wind farm development. A Species Distribution\u00a0Model (SDM) for N. leisleri was generated\u00a0using the MaxEnt algorithm based on 47 presence.<\/p>\n<p>records (reduced to 19 after the autocorrelation procedure)\u00a0and 10 environmental variables derived from\u00a0topographic and land cover maps. We used the SDMto\u00a0create a map of connectivity using the software\u00a0UNICOR to identify potential commuting corridors\u00a0(PCCs). The incidence of each wind farm on bat flight\u00a0corridors was assessed by overlaying the existing (380)\u00a0and planned (195) turbine locations onto the PCCs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-av_one_half-9c1d454dc06f7247226bc4e8f931daae\">\n.flex_column.av-av_one_half-9c1d454dc06f7247226bc4e8f931daae{\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-av_one_half-9c1d454dc06f7247226bc4e8f931daae av_one_half  avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_one_half  el_before_av_button  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding  '     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-av_textblock-0366cc7376be6c9e82a3e9cc8987b64f '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The\u00a0SDM was statistically robust (AUC[0.8). Most of the\u00a0corridors were concentrated in the western part of the<br \/>\nregion, which hosts the largest suitable areas for the\u00a0species; most of the existing (54 %) and planned\u00a0(72 %) wind farms interfered with important corridors\u00a0connecting the western and the eastern parts of the\u00a0region. Our results provide key information on the\u00a0impact of the wind farm industry on biodiversity on a\u00a0regional scale. The novel approach adopted, based on\u00a0SDM and connectivity analysis, could be easily\u00a0extended to other flying vertebrates and landscapes\u00a0and constitutes a promising planning tool necessary for\u00a0harmonizing the development of renewable energy\u00a0infrastructures with issues of biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<div  class='avia-button-wrap
